Ben, this is a fabulous piece. I'm surprised no one commented yet. You have done a great job of explaining how companies need to make sure that every encounter is part of the overall retention journey. Unfortunately, too many companies have not learned from Zappos. Zappos' number one priority is customer service and they make sure they only hire people who care about customers. In a business-to-business environment, most customers do not want to switch vendors. It's a cumbersome process, but companies basically force customers to start looking by providing lack luster, non caring service. Thanks again for sharing your expertise.
This post is expecially relevant to people who work in service-based businesses (marketers, ad reps, consultants).

Customers will judge you on more than just a great product at a fair price. Here are eight important cues that customers use when deciding whether or not to do business with you:

1) Attire and hygiene.

2) Punctuality.

3) Ability to listen.

4) Rapport.

5) How well you handles complaints or problems.

6) The people you associate with (other customers, suppliers, colleagues).

7) Writing skills. If your letters and emails are sloppy and riddled with errors, it leaves a negative impression.

8) Sincerity.

Hope these are helpful.

You're welcome! Thanks for the comment. (Although I think it may have been spam to get links to your site - but I'll take it as a compliment!)

I couldn't agree more - sure, it comes with problems, but ultimately responsibility and the ability to choose brings amazing freedom, opportunities and achievement :)
