What Makes the Difference?

A while back my wife, Shelley, and I had to make an unscheduled trip to our local Accident and Emergency department.

We are all fine now, but at the time Shelley was not feeling too well and being pregnant we figured better safe than sorry, so pitched up at reception at A&E.

Now as far as trips to A&E go, this was by no means the shortest – We were there for 7 and half hours. However, it was one of the best trips to A&E (if any trip to the emergency department can have an up side!) that I have had.

The reason it was such a good experience was because the staff kept us fully informed and more importantly kept their word. When ever we had to wait (and there was a lot of waiting) we were told exactly why we were waiting, how long we would have to take and the reasons it would take that long…AND THEY WERE RIGHT!!

We never had to go and ask what was going on. Whenever we expected a professional to turn up and give us some news, there they were, on time, as promised. I never had to chase them. I never had to go and nag a busy overworked nursed and get short shrift.

We left that hospital not only feeling physically better, but feeling satisfied that we had been treated well, like people not statistics, like we mattered. All because the doctors kept us informed and did what they promised!
